Spring Quarter
Stanford University
Dept. of Art & Art History
This course is a studio class in contemporary electronic art, focusing on digital media. We will investigate print-based, time-based and web-based uses of the computer, with an emphasis on contextualizing digital media within a tradition of fine art. We’ll read and discuss contemporary theory and history surrounding media art, both as a means of creating a common discourse and as an informative resource for material and inspiration. Students create works exploring two- and three-dimensional uses of the computer in fine art. While the time given for completing projects is very brief, you should plan to work within the time frame given, and to participate in all critiques. Please feel free to take an experimental approach to these projects, as our goal is to expand on the potential for art in relation to digital media.
