...The mixed media artist Laura Splan, for example, was firmly positioned in the Riot Grrrl movement in the USA in the 1990s. Using archive material from the Fales Library in New York City, it is possible to reconstruct their affiliation with the movement, which was a significant part of their artistic socialization process. Splan's early works were not only shown as part of Riot Grrrl events, the artist also emphasizes the inspiration from the activist, musical and artistically motivated movement. Their early artistic work, based on handicraft techniques (latch hook), indicates that the lady festivals initiated by the Riot Grrrl movement were characterized not only by music but also by art and crafting. Not really surprising - because the easily accessible Lo -Fi and DIY- character of the movement as well as the festival and event organization has very large overlaps with the character of handicrafts and critical crafting...
