Simons Foundation Collaboration

sciart collaboration with theoretical biophysicist Dr. Adam Lamson on animations, soundscapes, weavings, and public presentations
Collaboration

Simons Foundation Collaboration

ongoing engagement since 2022
Collaboration made possible by the Simons Foundation

Collaborator: Adam Lamson, Science Collaborator and theoretical biophysicist at Flatiron Institute, a division of the Simons Foundation

The Simons Foundation has supported Laura Splan's collaboration with Dr. Adam Lamson, Science Collaborator and theoretical biophysicist at Flatiron Institute, a division of the Simons Foundation. The project explores entanglements of computational and biological worlds through research, artworks, exhibitions, and public engagement. Process and production for the project are informed by Lamson’s chromatin simulations and Splan’s studio practice interrogating scientific imaging techniques. Collaboration activities included:

  • weekly 1-hour in-person meetings and discussions
  • collaborative research and experimentation based on scientist's research
  • production of molecular animations made with PDB models, PyMOL, Blender, and Python
  • production of data-driven soundscapes
  • production of computerized Jacquard weavings
  • production of website documenting research and process
  • participation in the production of video profile documenting collaboration
  • public presentations of collaboration
  • public exhibitions of co-created artworks

...biophysicist Adam Lamson is collaborating with artist Laura Splan in a project the two of them call ‘Sticky Settings’...From giant tapestries that present maps of DNA in colorful, tactile formats, to otherworldly animations set to music, their art invites a non-scientific audience to literally walk into the processes our own cells are undergoing every day...
