If I must define myself within the taxonomy of artists, I would classify myself as a conceptual formalist. This is a distinction that brings together seemingly oppositional approaches to the practice of art making. My projects usually start with conceptual ideas, integrating theory, research and personal fascinations. However, I am an object maker, concerned with craft, technology, materials, presence and form There are microphenomena that are abundant throughout the quotidian experience. I am primarily influenced by a sense of wonder with the miniscule details of the world -- a place where the everyday object modulates into poetry. Often using, materials, images and objects that are close at hand, I join the study of the cultural production of meaning, while creating an experience in viewing my work that will replicate a feeling of enchantment, fascination and wonder. Sometimes experience can supersede understanding. I have been paying attention to aspects of the invention of Nature as a conceptualized entity. This relies on cultural traditions where the Natural Wonder exists as an aesthetic object, illustrating the sublime and the picturesque. |
